If two people have sex fir the first time, is there any way of getting an STD?

I don't understand if it is a disease that is passed on from someone who already has it... Or if you can develop it and pass it on... As in if I have sex for the first time with my girlfriend, is there any way either of us have it? (We both still have our virginity)
